Fircroft College
officially reopens
|
Exactly a year since
being devastated by a fire, Fircroft College of Adult
Education celebrated its official reopening in a
ceremony attended by students, staff and friends of
the college.
Although many courses have continued to run at Fircroft
since the fire struck on 15th October 2008, building,
restoration and refurbishment has only recently been
completed. The reopening ceremony celebrated the fact
that the college is now fully back up and running and
looking better than ever!
The drizzle did little to dampen spirits as Roger
Cadbury, a Fircroft governor and grandson of College
founder George Cadbury Jr, performed the honours and
‘cut the ribbon’ to officially reopen the college. He
comments, “I have happy memories of spending time here
at my grandfather’s home and enjoying the huge gardens.
It’s wonderful that students can once again enjoy this
beautiful building and grounds.”
The event attracted much attention from the local media
and was covered in local newspapers the Birmingham Mail
and the Birmingham Post. The college also welcomed crews
from BBC Radio WM and from ITV Central News who came to
report on the event and to interview Roger Cadbury,
Principal Fiona Larden and Duty Manager Martin Bain, who
helped escort students to safety on the night of the
fire.

Martin on the Phil Upton breakfast show on BBC Radio WM,
15th October 2009. (This will open as a .mp3 file)

Forthcoming Open Days
There are Open Days at
Fircroft College on the first Thursday of every month, for
anyone interested in finding out more about the college and
courses on offer. Coming to an Open Day is a great opportunity
for you to have a look around, speak to staff, get advice and
guidance and find out how studying at Fircroft can benefit you.
If required, we can also assess your current English and Maths
skills, which will enable you to join a course at a level which
is comfortable but still challenging. Open Days begin at 10am
and last for around 2 hours.
You can book your place at an Open Event by calling us on 0121
472 0116, or email

Don’t delay
- apply now for short courses!
Now that Fircroft is fully up and
running following last October’s fire, there are many more short
courses running this year, with a wide range of subject areas
for students to choose from. Places have been filling up
quickly, however there are still limited spaces
available on the following courses between now and the end of
the year:
-
Preparing to Teach in the
Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) – this is a valuable
two-part course aimed at teachers or trainers in the
voluntary and community sector. Part One runs from 30
November to 3 December, with Part Two running from 25 to 28
January
-
Developing Customer Service Skills (2-4 December) – this is
one of a number of employability courses at Fircroft aimed
at boosting your work skills and will give you the knowledge
and practice to help you succeed in a customer-focused
organisation
-
Making Choices in Pursuit of Personal Goals (7-9 December) –
this course will help you to make your goals a reality,
assessing your current situation, where you want to be and
how to get there.
There’s
lots more coming up in 2010, so why not plan ahead and view our
short course dates at a
glance which lists all courses running up until March
2010, or call our short course office on 0121 472 0116 for more
information. Our programme for March 2010 – July 2010 will be
published in the New Year.
Family Learning returns
to Fircroft College
 |
We are delighted to
announce that Family Learning courses will be returning to
Fircroft College in 2010, following a ‘year off’ due to building
work and the crèche being temporarily out of action.
Family Learning courses provide a unique opportunity for parents
and children to learn together and have fun while they explore
aspects of the National Curriculum, from Year 1 up to Year 6.
Courses are open to families with at least one child attending a
Birmingham Primary School.
We will be holding two fun-filled taster events in November to
give you an introduction to family learning. These FREE events
are open to parents with children aged 5-12 and last from 9.15am
until 4pm, including free lunch. |
Making a Numeracy Game on Saturday 7th November - Spend time
playing favourite family board games and make your own game to
take home with you.
Creating Story Puppets on Saturday 21st November - Bring
characters to life by creating puppets of your choice.
Contact Sam Lerner on 0121 472 0116,
sam.lerner@fircroft.ac.uk
to book your place, or click here for more information on Family
Learning.
Focus on former Access
students
Each year
Fircroft College runs an Access to Higher Education course for
adults who want to go to University, but who don’t have the
right qualifications. This is a 30 week full-time programme and
attracts a diverse group of students from the UK and beyond.
What all Access students have in common is the desire to learn
and fulfil their potential.
We catch up
with three of our former Access students to see what they’re up
to now.
