Students honoured at awards ceremony

Students from Fircroft College of Adult Education were recognised at an annual awards ceremony, held on Monday 21st December at the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, University of Birmingham.

Over 150 adult learners received certificates for achieving on their course, from Professor Michael Taylor, Chair of Fircroft Governors and Fiona Larden, Principal of Fircroft College.

There were also three recipients of the James Wong Award, given to the students who overcame the greatest personal and educational barriers to progress. James Wong is a former student of Fircroft, now a barrister in Hong Kong, who kindly sponsors this prize of £100, awarded this year to Paul Cansick, Lucy Kitching and Carmen Pace.

The ceremony also saw John Murden made an honorary fellow of Fircroft, in recognition of his service as a former governor and his commitment to the College.

Principal Fiona Larden commented, "This was a wonderful occasion and an opportunity for everyone involved with Fircroft to acknowledge the hard work and commitment of our students. I’m very proud of each one of them.”

Voluntary groups benefit from Fit4Purpose project

January 2010 saw the completion of the Fit4Purpose project - a tailored package of support for ten local voluntary and community groups on the Kings Norton three Estates, delivered by Fircroft College along with SWBCA (South West Birmingham Community Association).

Funded by New Deal for Communities the project ran for seven months, with the aim of securing the future of these groups and the contribution they make to the regeneration of the area.

The project has been hailed a success by many of the groups who benefited. Sam Akintoye at BLISS youth group commented,

“The Fit4Purpose project has been one of the most beneficial for community groups in Kings Norton. The delivery by Fircroft College has been exceptionally good as they have provided brilliant knowledge sharing and learning atmosphere as well as dedicated members of staff offering a consistently professional and friendly support".

Fircroft at the forefront of technology

Fircroft College has won national recognition for the way it uses digital technology, computers and the web to help its learners succeed, after being accepted as a member of the prestigious Technology Exemplar Network. This is a national group of further education colleges and skills training bodies which promote and shares innovative and excellent use of technology.

Success in being appointed to the network is a huge achievement for Fircroft, as only 61 out of more than 220 applicants across the country were selected. It recognises the strength of Fircroft’s commitment to transforming its teaching, learning and management through the use of digital technology.

The Technology Exemplar Network was launched in 2008 to help colleges and other learning and training organisations use technology more effectively by sharing best practice. It is led by Becta – the government’s educational technology agency – and the Learning and Skills Council (LSC).

Date for your diary – Fircroft student reunion!

To celebrate one hundred years of Fircroft College, we will be inviting ‘Firkers’ past and present to a special student reunion on Sunday 8th August 2010. We’re hoping this will be a great occasion and a chance for Fircroft alumni to catch up with old friends and reminisce about their time at the college.

If you’re a former Fircroft student and would like to come to the event, keep an eye on the website for more details in the coming months. In the meantime, put the date in your diary.
