Kim Cartwright (40) from Birmingham tells us about why she came to Fircroft and how it has benefited her...

Why did you decide to come to Fircroft?

I first came to Fircroft about two years ago. I was doing some voluntary work for Birmingham City Council and they sent me to Fircroft College to do a lay assessors course. I enjoyed the experience and decided I wanted to come back to do some personal development courses as well.

What were you doing before you came here?

I was living in supported housing. I’d enrolled on College courses several times but could never last the distance. My mental health issues and learning disability made it difficult for me to achieve in mainstream colleges and to stay in employment.

Why did you come back to Fircroft after your initial course?

I could see straight away the difference between Fircroft and the other places I’d been to. It was smaller and seemed more calm. Class sizes were smaller so it was less daunting, plus it was easier to ask questions and I got a lot of support. My tutor was so patient, understanding and easy to speak to. Staff are really friendly and will do their best to help. I also liked the fact that you’re not ‘labelled’ at Fircroft - all sorts of people come to the College from different backgrounds and ability levels and are treated the same.

How has being at Fircroft benefited you?

At first I was very quiet but the courses I’ve completed have helped me to become more confident and more independent. I’m now better at speaking up for myself and I’ve also moved into my own place.

What do you plan to do after Fircroft?

I hope to get a full-time job, perhaps working with people who have mental health issues or learning disabilities.
