Our accredited Level 2 Award in Introduction to Volunteering is an important part of our curriculum. We understand the value of volunteering for individuals, organisations and community. On this course you will explore the value of volunteering and will learn about the different types of organisations that offer volunteer opportunities, the skills that can be developed and how volunteering can help with career goals. You will develop your study skills, team work skills and share and learn from other members of the class.

This course is for you if:

  • You are considering volunteering and would like to learn more about the benefits of becoming a volunteer for you and for an organisation providing volunteering opportunities.
  • You wish to improve confidence, skills and knowledge, about volunteering.
  • If you wish to understand the value of contributing to community assets through volunteering.
  • You are wanting to get back into employment and feel volunteering is a positive first step but are not sure what volunteering involves, which organisations you can volunteer with and how to access volunteer opportunities.

Volunteering and Voluntary Organisations: You will investigate the types of organisations in which people can volunteer and the purpose and functions of those organisations. You will also explore the rules and requirements relating to being a volunteer, including organisation structure, purpose, roles and key operating policies such as safeguarding.

Finding out about volunteering and becoming a volunteer:

This unit will help to prepare you for work in a voluntary capacity. You will identify and research an organisation of your choice. You will look at the volunteer roles available, consider the skills required, identify any personal areas for skill development and prepare a plan to help you to achieve this.

You will be studying in a beautiful environment and will have the opportunity during the course to undertake some brief volunteer work within the Fircroft gardens. This will help highlight the value of sustaining green spaces, and the development of green skills. It will help you to consider volunteer opportunities in green spaces, which are essential for future green skill employment opportunities and for our eco-systems.

On completion of this course, you will:

  • Understand the role of a volunteer within a voluntary organisation.
  • Understand the activities of a voluntary organisation.
  • Identify the skills required to be a successful volunteer
  • Understand the regulatory frameworks that may apply to being a volunteer.
  • Be able to work as a volunteer
  • Feel prepared to undertake further study to help you progress toward achieving your goals

The voluntary sector in the UK is an essential part of our economy, and significant in its contribution to the health and wellbeing of our communities. It has an interesting history, an important ethos and this too will be discussed within this course giving context and great value to the role of the volunteer.
