Green Changemakers Course

Non-residential, 2 days x 3 weeks at the college (Wednesday and Thursday) and 2 online sessions

This course will give you, our students (Green Changemakers), the skills to design, implement and influence local and college-wide Green Skills initiatives, in order to move from good intentions to long-term sustainable change.

This programme will develop flexibly to enable you, the Changemakers, to concurrently develop your practice. It is anchored by three frameworks, each of which is underpinned by research and practice-evidence:

  • AimHi Earth’s ‘15 Green Skills, Clearly Explained’ (enabling you to identify and extend your Green Skills skillset)
  • FE Constellation’s ‘Four Seasons of Changemaking’ (enabling you to identify and extend your Changemaking skillset)
  • The Thinking Environment (enabling you to build pause into busy working environments)

Each of the six days will include practical and reflective activities, collaborative working and time in the outdoor classroom.

Day 1 – Introduction to the course, the facilitation framework,  Fircroft College and Green Changemaking. Administration and expectations. Relationship building. The case for change.

Day 2 – Getting Unstuck (Season 1) Local and national contexts, the Values Line. Generating Values Line and Possibility Questions. Time to Think Council.

Day 3 – Releasing Potentia. Different kinds of power – potentia and potestas. Golden Unicorns. Overcoming eco-anxiety (Susan Joy Hassol). Influence Analysis and strategy development. Nature Connectivity and the Grammar of Animacy. Rhizomatic networking.

Day 4 – Gaining Clarity. Radical Rest. Non-Violent Communication. Radical Candour. Integrating Green Skills into strategy, systems, practice and culture. Community philosophy. The Bowerbird. Momentum – potentia and pause.

Day 5 – Co-Creating Unimagined Futures. Transdisciplinary, transformative education. Folk High School Movement. At Fircroft we sing. Storytelling. Developing communities of practice. Amplifying sector voice and influencing policy

Day 6 – Constellations of Practice. Convening the Adventure Ready Squad. Virtual Green Skills Hub.  Co-evaluation.


After successfully completing this course, you will be able to implement workplace application – cooperatively lead systems, process and culture change in your organisation

Eligibility Criteria

The Green Changemaking course is for anyone working in further education or higher education (including work-based learning and adult and community learning or adult training) who wants to co-operatively lead systems, process and culture change in their organisation and beyond. The course is open to anyone at any level of the organisation.

You must be working at literacy Level 1
