Level

Level 2

The course will explore how the ground-breaking concept of intersectionality was first identified and used, and will consider how this idea can be used to think about causes of social inequality. We will also look at what intersectionality tells us about the ongoing challenges of working towards social justice and fighting disadvantage and discrimination.

During this course we will develop critical questions to ask each other about our everyday experiences. We will also think about how our personal identities are part of patterns of social inequality and we will explore how the same problem can be seen from multiple perspectives

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Understand how and when the theory of intersectionality was first used to think about inequality
  • Explore examples of intersections of race, gender and class in everyday life
  • Consider how intersections of race, gender and class affect people in different ways
  • Think about how intersectionality is part of ongoing work towards social justice
