We are a values-driven College, committed to high quality learning with a Mission to ‘promote social justice by providing adults with an excellent learning environment for personal, professional and political development’. There are now only two adult residential colleges left in England.

We have several vacancies on our Governing Body and are looking to fill these with people from diverse backgrounds and experience with a strong commitment to social justice and adult education. Previous experience as a Charity Trustee or Further Education governor is helpful but not essential.

We are particularly interested in strengthening our Board in the following areas:

  • Further and adult education policy and funding arrangements
  • Local and regional employer skills needs/links
  • Safeguarding
  • Financial management
  • Charity law and trustee duties (including experience in companies limited by guarantee)
  • Assessments, audit and OFSTED inspections
  • Sustainability and climate change action.

Good oral communication skills and the ability to think and plan strategically, monitor performance and outcomes, and interpret different forms of information, including reports and data, are all necessary. All Governors are expected to share a commitment to safeguarding adults.

The role is unpaid but reasonable expenses can be reimbursed. Benefits of the role include helping to transform lives through education, working collaboratively with an enthusiastic group of governors, and gaining boardroom experience for personal and professional development and your CV.

Necessary technology and a full induction process followed by ongoing training and support are provided.

Governing Body meetings are currently held four times a year, supplemented by termly sub-committee meetings. When it is safe to do so meetings will be held at the College although remote access will still be available. Commitment to attend meetings and engage with Board business is essential.

Our Principal Mel Lenehan says, “This a very exciting time to join our Governing Body to help secure a vibrant and successful future for the College. The work and commitment of the College to social and climate justice are as vital now as they ever were in our 111-year history. We want to continue to diversify our Governing Body to ensure we remain representative and responsive to the vibrant and diverse communities of the West Midlands”.
