This course is for you if you work or volunteer, or are intending to work or volunteer, in a role where you provide information, advice and/or guidance to your service users, customers or clients and will enable you to make informed choices and develop further skills in the area of advice work.

This is an accredited qualification that will give you the formal skills and knowledge to enhance your work with others and is ideal if you are working or volunteering, or wish to work or volunteer, in the following (and other) roles:

Education - working with pupils or students

Charities - giving information, advice and guidance to service-users and/or volunteers

Healthcare - advising and guiding patients and perhaps signposting them to other services

Customer service - offering information, advice and/or guidance to your customers

There are many roles that are suitable for this course and it will enhance your skills and demonstrate to others that you have acquired the knowledge needed to give good and appropriate information, advice or guidance.

During this course you will learn about:

  • Developing effective practice in the area of information, advice and guidance
  • Understanding the role and boundaries of giving information, advice and guidance 
  • Enhancing existing practice in the area of information, advice and guidance
  • Identifying the information, advice and guidance needs of clients
  • Broadening your knowledge in your own area of information, advice and guidance
  • Appropriately signposting clients onto relevant services.

There will be guest speakers working in varied roles such as education, support work and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), talking about their work with their service users and how information, advice and guidance works in their organisation. 

On successful completion of this course you could progress to the next level qualification to specialise in information, advice and guidance.

Entry Requirements

You will need to be working at Level 2 literacy, or above.

You will need to be working or volunteering, or planning to work or volunteer, in an information, advice and guidance role

You will need to successfully complete an Initial Assessment
