Free Thinking - a course for new communities

This course is for people working at Entry-Level 2 and above.  For men and women from new communities who have lived experience of modern slavery, trafficking and trauma, Free Thinking can help them to relax, refresh, review their lives and progress.

This very popular course is a regular at the college and is one of the reasons we have College of Sanctuary status, given to us by City of Sanctuary in 2021.

The course includes:

    • Sharing stories in a safe and supportive environment

    • ESOL – taught separately and embedded in many of the lessons

    • Employability skills and advice

    • Your rights and responsibilities

    • Wellbeing and confidence building skills

    • IT and presentation skills development

    • Team building and problem solving skills

Digital Functional Skills - Entry-Level 3

Now, more than ever, products and services have moved online and it seems to be increasingly difficult to access them.  This qualification will give you an understanding of, and competency in, the essential digital skills you need for every day life and it will enable you to engage with those essential digital services and products that are often sold online only.  You will also be introduced to a range of websites and given the knowledge of how to engage with them confidently and safely.

You will cover the following digital skills:

    • Being safe and responsible online and on digital devices

    • Using digital devices and handling information

    • Creating and editing

    • Digital communication

    • Communicating with people digitally

STARTING DATE: Monday 20th May - Wednesday 3rd July 2024

Certificate in Enterprise and Creative Craft - Level 2

Explore your creative abilities and learn new craft techniques and skills.  This course is ideal if you are thinking of working in the creative industries or want to broaden your creative craft knowledge.

This qualification is a great opportunity for you to explore your creative abilities and is designed for anyone who wishes to develop their skills and knowledge in creative crafts. You will learn new techniques in creative crafts alongside developing your drawing skills and knowledge of the creative industries. The course will work through two design briefs which will involve developing your initial ideas and producing your final craft items within a sustainability agenda.

UK and Citizenship: Britain's Role From Imperialism To Colonialism

This course is ideal for you if you have a particular interest in history, social issues and current affairs. It is also a good taster course for you if you are applying for one of our Access to Higher Education diplomas starting in September.

The course explores:

    • What brought different communities to Britain and where communities have settled

    • The trends in immigration from 1945 to present day

    • Who has come to Britain, when did they arrive and why did they come?

    • How immigration has changed the population make-up of Britain today

You will also gain an understanding of:

    • The main trends in immigration from 1945 to present day

    • Some of the ‘push’ and ‘pull’ factors affecting immigration

    • Legislation which has helped to bring communities  to the UK

    • The changing make up of British society

UK and Citizenship: Immigration From 1945 To Present Day

This course is ideal for you if you have a particular interest in history, social issues and current affairs. It is also a good taster course for you if you are applying for one of our Access to Higher Education diplomas starting in September.

This course is part of the UK and citizenship course designed to raise awareness and understanding of immigration from 1945 up to present day

The course will look at:

    • What has brought different communities to Britain and where they have settled

    • The trends in immigration from 1945 to present day

    • Who has come to the UK, when and why?

    • How immigration has changed the population make up of Britain today

    • Understanding the main trends in immigration from 1945 to present day

    • Understanding some of the ‘push’ and ‘pull’ factors affecting immigration

    • Understanding legislation which has helped to bring communities to the UK

    • The changing make up of British society

This course is ideal if you have a particular interest in history and present day society and/or if you are thinking in the future of studying one of our Access to Higher Education diplomas.

We will explore:

    • What multiculturalism is and how it has changed British society today

    • The benefits of multi-culturalism

    • How immigration and multi-culturalism has helped build Britain following World War 2

    • How multi-culturalism has benefited British society today

    • Some of the policies and acts passed around multi-culturalism

    • How immigration and multi-culturism helped re-build Britain following World War 2
