This course is an introduction to raising awareness of autism by increasing your understanding of the condition. You will engage with key topics, including how the condition was first identified and how understanding of the condition has evolved in decades since. You will also develop a deeper understanding of some of the characteristic traits associated with the condition and consider the challenges that an individual may face as a result, as well as looking at ways to further support an individual diagnosed with the condition.

Anyone can attend the course. In particular someone who has a keen interest in gaining a basic understanding of what autism is. May also suit those wishing to pursue employment/ training within childcare settings/educational setting and health and social care.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course students will be able to:

  1. Know what autism is and the historical context of autism
  2. Understand the classification of autism with the autistic spectrum
  3. Recognise symptoms of autism and understand diagnosis.
  4. Know a range of communication tools and interventions that can be used to support those with autism.

Entry Requirements

You must be working at Level 1 or above in literacy
