Green Skills: Building the Future (Phase 1)

Residential at the college (3 days and 2 nights x 2 weeks - Wednesday - Friday each week)

We are building an Eco-Classroom – a brand new classroom in our college grounds which will have exciting features to ensure it’s sustainable and environmentally friendly, where we will teach our green skills courses. And we want YOU to be involved!

Wednesday 10th – Friday 12th July 2024

Wednesday 24th – Friday 26th July 2024

The eco-build will be made up of three phases:

  • Insight and consultation (what you will be doing on this course, Phase 1)
  • Planning and design (this will be done on Phase 2 between September and December 2024 – dates to be decided)
  • Manufacturing/Pre-build planning and construction (this will be done on Phase 3 between January and April 2025 – dates to be decided)

You will have the opportunity to work with key partners involved in the build and you will be introduced to people with expert knowledge along the way.

Dates for Phase 2 and Phase 3 will be published later in 2024. You will be able to apply for these other phases as well as Phase 1.

Phase 1 (this course) covers the following areas:

Wednesday 10th – Friday 12th July:

  • Site heritage
  • Donut economics
  • How to identify and create your build goal
  • Phase 1 planning
  • Consultation 101 and insight and intelligence gathering 
  • Story telling session

Wednesday 24th – Friday 26th July:

  • Carbon footprint/literacy/calculations
  • Surveying the site e.g. Tree surveys
  • Biodiversity of the site – baseline and increasing diversity
  • Resourcing, reclaiming and using local materials
  • Alternative use of materials and systems
  • Story telling session

Eligibility Criteria

This course is for anyone who is interested in the phases of an eco-build and for those who would like to use the skills gathered within their own communities.

You must be working at literacy Level 1
