This Award has an organisational focus, so you must be working or volunteering for an organisation while on the course. We will explore its purpose, structure and culture. Then analyse the external environment, including the impact of current policy and legislation, before recommending how your organisation could respond. This will also be an opportunity to reflect on your own place in the organisation and your personal values and behaviours.

Please note: If you are enrolled onto the ILM Leadership and Management Level 4 Award in February/March 2026 and you complete it successfully. and you also apply for, and are enrolled, onto this course as well, you will receive an ILM Level 4 Certificate on successful completion of both courses

If you have previously completed an ILM Leadership and Management Level 4 Award within the last 2 years, at Fircroft College, and you successfully apply for, and complete, this course you will receive an ILM Level 4 Certificate.

About the Course
This Award is a great opportunity for you to step away from your working life for 2 weekends, compare your situation with others on the course and gain confidence in your own management behaviours.
We will cover 2 units and achieving both of these leads to the Level 4 Award:
- Understanding the organisational culture and context
- Understanding work in contemporary society
The course is taught by an experienced manager, using well recognised ideas. You will also learn from other students and the different sectors they work in. You become a student member of the Institute of Leadership and Management with access to their professional resources for 6 months.
The areas we will cover include:
- The nature and purpose of your organisation
- Whether your organisation’s structure helps it achieve its goals
- The impact of the external environment on your organisation
- The implications of policies, procedures and legislation for your work
- The culture of your organisation
By the end of the end of the course you will have:
- Practiced using analysis techniques
- Reflected on your own values and behaviour
- Made recommendations for change

Who is this course for?
This course is for anyone who is currently in a management role (paid or unpaid) or who has previous management experience AND is working or volunteering for an organisation at the moment.
Entry Requirements
- You need to be working in the role of a manager/supervisor/team leader. Or have previous experience of being in one of these roles.
- To pass the assignments you must be working for or volunteering for an organisation at the moment, so you know it know well enough to write about its current position and make recommendations
- You will be required to demonstrate you are able to write assignments at a Level 4 standard
- You will need a computer and internet access to work independently between your weekends and to submit your assignments
