“Go for it. Enjoy it and make the most of the quiet time.”

When Nargis Darby took on a directorship role with Rooted In The Community, a community interest company, she wanted to strengthen her skills and confidence in delivering workshops and training.

Her time at Fircroft gave her the opportunity to develop professionally while also gaining a deeper appreciation of the different experiences and perspectives that learners bring to the classroom.

Developing New Skills

Nargis first attended the Introduction to Running Training Sessions course alongside a fellow director of Rooted In The Community.

As part of the organisation’s work, Nargis helps to develop and deliver workshops and training. The course gave her a greater understanding of what makes training effective and why it is important to consider the needs of learners when designing and delivering sessions.

“This course helped me understand how to ensure our trainings and workshops are effective and the importance of doing this.”

Nargis then went on to complete the Award in Education and Training, motivated by changes she was making to her working life and a desire to explore new professional opportunities.

The Fircroft Experience

For Nargis, the Fircroft environment was an important part of the learning experience.

She particularly enjoyed the calm and peaceful surroundings, as well as the opportunity to stay residentially.

“The residential experience is incredible.”

With plenty of spaces to relax or study, a library with useful research materials and fresh, delicious food, Nargis found Fircroft an environment where she could focus on her development.

Growing in Confidence

Studying at Fircroft has helped Nargis develop the self-belief to move forward with her work in the community.

Her confidence in delivering training has increased, and she has also had the opportunity to put her skills into practice by delivering an enrichment session at Fircroft.

The experience has also helped Nargis appreciate the diversity within a learning environment and the different experiences that learners bring with them.

“Studying at Fircroft has helped me appreciate the diversity and experiences others bring to a learning environment. It has given me the self-belief I need to move forward in the community interest company.”

Nargis’s Advice to Future Students

Nargis has a simple message for anyone considering studying at Fircroft:

“Go for it. Enjoy it and make the most of the quiet time.”

For Nargis, Fircroft has provided more than new knowledge and qualifications. It has given her the confidence to develop her work, explore new possibilities and continue making a difference in her community.

Looking to the Future

Nargis is continuing to build on what she learned at Fircroft.

Through Rooted In The Community, she is developing self-advocacy training, with the aim of having the programme accredited.

She is also working on a personal creative writing project and training.

Her experience at Fircroft has helped her move forward with greater confidence and a stronger understanding of how to support different learning needs.

“It would have taken me longer to develop my confidence to deliver training.”
