Please note: You should have the emotional readiness and capacity to engage in discussions about challenging and potentially sensitive topics during this course.

On this course, you will develop an understanding of trauma responses, trauma-informed care principles, and practical strategies for supporting individuals experiencing mental health difficulties. The course focuses on safe, supportive practice, effective communication, and recognising when to refer individuals to appropriate services.

This course is for you if you are working or volunteering with people affected by PTSD or mental health needs. It is also for those interested in this type of role.

The course will help you to:

• Develop understanding of mental health and common mental health conditions

• Increase awareness of trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

• Explore how trauma affects the brain, behaviour, and wellbeing

• Recognise signs of mental distress and trauma responses

• Develop skills to communicate and respond appropriately

• Introduce trauma-informed care approaches

• Encourage self-care and resilience for those supporting others

You will receive a college certificate on completion of the course.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

1. Define mental health, trauma and PTSD.

2. Identify common mental health conditions and their impact.

3. Recognise signs of mental distress and trauma responses.

4. Describe different types of trauma and PTSD.

5. Explain the principles of trauma-informed care.

6. Identify strategies to support individuals experiencing trauma or mental health difficulties.

7. Demonstrate effective communication techniques.

8. Recognise the importance of self-care and boundaries when supporting others.
