When I first walked through the doors of Fircroft College, I was looking for something many people seek at different stages of their lives: direction, confidence and a greater understanding of where I fit into society.
At the time, I was already working in social care, supporting vulnerable children, young people and adults. However, I wanted to develop myself further, gain new perspectives and build the skills that would help me navigate both my personal and professional life more effectively.
Fircroft College provided exactly that.
Finding Confidence Through Learning
The courses I attended were about more than gaining certificates. They encouraged me to reflect on who I was, understand the world around me and recognise the positive contribution I could make to society.
Courses such as Finding Your Place in Society helped me explore issues around community, identity, communication and personal development. They challenged me to think differently and gave me the confidence to step outside my comfort zone.
One of the most valuable lessons I learned at Fircroft was that education is not simply about academic achievement; it is about personal growth.
Through discussions with tutors and fellow learners from a wide variety of backgrounds, I developed greater self-awareness, empathy and confidence in my abilities.
These experiences helped shape the path I would eventually follow.
Where am I now?
Over the years, I progressed through a range of roles supporting vulnerable children, young people and adults.
My career has included working as a Residential Support Worker, Family Mediator, Homelessness Prevention Coordinator, Learning Mentor, Youth Mentor and Team Leader. Each role gave me the opportunity to apply the skills I had developed through education and lifelong learning.
My commitment to personal development continued, leading me to achieve:
- A BA (Hons) in Social Care and Social Policy
- A Master’s Degree in Law
- A Level 5 qualification in Leadership and Management
- An accredited Level 4 qualification in Interpersonal Mediation
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
Today, I am a lecturer in Health and Social Care, helping students develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to achieve their own goals. I also continue to work within housing and social care services, supporting individuals facing some of life’s most difficult challenges.
Leon’s Advice to Future Students
“Take every opportunity available to you. Engage in discussions, ask questions, challenge yourself and believe in your potential. The course you are attending today may be the first step towards a future you cannot yet imagine.”
I certainly could not have predicted that my journey would lead me to become a lecturer, mentor, mediator and leader.
Yet each step, including those taken at Fircroft College, helped shape the person I am today.
